Most weight loss and sport experts agree that swimming is one of the best forms of exercise out there. It blitzes all the major muscle groups during a single workout with minimal stress on joints and a low rate of injury.

Swimming is rare in the fact that it gives a strength-training workout, as well as an aerobic workout at the same time. While swimming, your body is forced to intake more oxygen to help you move all your limbs at the same time, creating a great aerobic workout. In addition, the natural resistance of the water helps to build the spectacular muscle tone that you see so commonly on swimmers’ bodies.

Swimming is essentially the Ironman store of exercise due to its stellar combination of strength training and aerobic exercise. It is regularly touted as the best overall workout for conditioning and weight loss. Its superior cardio vascular workout along with low stress on your joints makes it a perfect alternative to those who find jogging or running too jarring and uncomfortable for their bodies. This is particularly true for women who suffer from osteoporosis, which can make the bones and joints much more fragile and prone to injury.

One of the drawbacks of swimming is the fact that you need access to a swimming pool. Even if you have a pool, it may be unavailable for a significant portion of the year during the winter. If you are truly keen on making swimming a staple of your workout, then look for athletic clubs or gyms that have a pool or access to a pool in the membership contracts.

Incorporating all muscle groups, providing a strength-training workout comparable to weightlifting, and giving your body an aerobic workout at the same time are the reasons why swimming will always be regarded as one of the safest and most effective forms of all-around exercise.

Swimming is a great way to lose weight and get fit. There is less chance of injury in the a swimming pool since movements are slower. Pool exercises are great for muscle pain and joint problems as well, while still offering a great workout. Exercising in a pool gives an all-over body workout, as it works out every muscle in the body. A few simple exercises can boost your weight loss and can leave you feeling productive.

Arm Curls

Stand with your feet a little less than shoulder-width apart. Hold a weight in each hand. Keep the elbows tucked in to the sides. Starting with the right arm, fully extended down at the side. Curl the arm up until the arm is fully curled with the weight almost touching the shoulder. Make sure that the elbow stays in and touching the side of the body through the entire movement. Breathe in as the arm is curled up and exhale as the arm is fully extended again. Switch to the left arm and repeat. Start with 5 reps for each arm. As it becomes easier, increase the number of reps.

Dolphin Kick

The dolphin kick is used for the butterfly stroke. Dolphin kicking is extremely difficult and works the entire body all at once. Use either a kick board or place the hands on the wall. Keep the knees and feet together. Using the hips and abs, kick with knees and feet together, so that the movement goes from the hips, down to the knees and then to the feet (similar as to how a dolphin moves in the water, in a wave motion). This exercise will maximize the use of the ab muscles, since they are used the entire time. Do this kick for at least a minute as hard as possible. Increase the time as the kick becomes easier.

Why Morning Pool Workouts Earn You Big Breakfasts

Many people exercise regularly because of strict doctor’s orders. Others exercise because they care about their health, or because they care about their figure and losing weight. Yet there is another group of people who are motivated to exercise by something entirely different: the freedom to eat like a pig. Yes, some people only exercise so that they can hear the sweet words “carbo-load” or “recovery meal,” and if you love breakfast foods, there is no better solution than a regular morning pool workout.

Swimming is one of the few exercises that is both aerobic and anaerobic. Simply put, swimming works out both your heart as well as your muscles. However if you examine the diet of any marathon runner and cross-reference it against the diet of any power lifter, you will see there are some drastic differences in what each of them eats and why.

For those who need energy for aerobic workouts, such as running long distances or high intensity sustained cycling, carbohydrates are the most effective fuel for the body. Foods such as pasta, potatoes and breads all contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates, which can be stored in the body and broken down over longer periods of time. This means that when the body is looking for an extra push to get through a particularly rough patch, it will go to its reserve of carbohydrates for energy.

Strength training, on the other hand, requires a high-protein diet. Protein is one of the main components in muscle and tissue rebuilding, and since strength training is nothing more than the continuous destruction and re-building of the body’s muscles, having protein in the diet is an excellent thing.

How does this relate to swimmers and breakfast foods? Since swimmers are working at a sustained, high intensity aerobic pace, while also working muscles in their arms, legs, and core, they are in a position to eat both carbs and protein. Some examples? French toast, pancakes, and hash browns accompanied by some delicious bacon, sausage and/or eggs.

For these reasons, swimming is not only beneficial for your health, but also can be responsible for enhancing your morning diet.
