Back Float

Even the most complex swimming stroke involves only two skills: floating and adding propulsion to get a swimmer to move. The first step might be the most frightening for novices.

Floating is the basis of all swimming, and it should be easy for most people to master with a little practice. For the vast majority of people holding a full breath makes it impossible to sink. Human bodies are inherently buoyant, which means that it is not a skill that needs to be learned. Three elements control buoyancy: breath control, body position and relaxation. Relaxation might be the key in the beginning because even though human bodies float a large percentage of a person’s body will still be submerged in the water. Panicking while attempting to keep one’s head above water could result in a failure to float.

The back float is one of the easiest and most important skills for a swimmer to learn. It allows a person to rest and breathe in deep water. A back float requires almost no effort and it may save lives in the event of an accident on open water. The back float is also important when trying to learn one of several strokes that require swimmers to be on their backs.

A proper back float has a swimmer lying down in the water so that his or her ears are submerged. When holding steady in the water it is time to practice breathing techniques. Take short quick breathes through the mouth, while holding in breath for periods.

A full back float is achieved when a swimmer is able to extend his or her arms above the head. The feet will rise as the arm move up and a simple and potentially life saving technique has been learned. Rather than treading water for hours the back float can keep people breathing and rested while waiting for help to arrive.

Swimming Fashion Details

Swimming apparel usually uses the same basic silhouettes such as a bikini, one piece, or tankini. If you want to stand out when you go to the beach or pool then you need to look for subtle details. This can also make your suit feel more expensive.

Bows are a popular feature and it won’t get in the way of swimming. This is a way to combine two looks into one suit. You might have a sleek and modern halter top suit. It might need a few feminine details to tone it down. Look for a ribbon and bow around the torso to create an empire silhouette. This can feature the same fabric as the rest of the suit so that it is easy to care for.

Chains and belts are popular both on the runways and in the swimming pool. This is a subtle detail that gives you a defined waist. Again, look for water resistant materials. The suit should have an affixed belt so that it stays in place in the water.

Ruffles add felinity to your swimming ensemble. You’ll need to make sure that this doesn’t feel too juvenile. Look for smaller ruffles around the neckline. You may want to avoid this on a pink or purple suit because it will feel too much like little girls’ swimwear. Instead look for these details on a black or brown suit.

Studs add a metallic element to a suit. You need to be concerned with comfort as well as weight and durability so you can actually go swimming in your new suit. Coordinate this with gold sandals and totes for a coordinating outfit.

The pattern is also an important consideration. Look for retro prints. This would include a swirl or geometric design. It can have a mix of pastel lavenders, greens, and aqua for a modern take on vintage patterns. You can also look for a retro color such as orange paired with a more contemporary color like chocolate brown.

Swimming is a fun activity for many children. There is nothing like taking a cool dip in the pool when the temperatures of summer are rising. Here are three great games that children can play in the pool.

The first great game that can be played in the pool is called Marco Polo. One child is chosen to be Marco. All the other children are Polo’s. The child that is Marco closes his or her eyes for the portion of the game. When the child that is Marco, yells “Marco” all the other children have to yell “Polo.” Then the child that is Marco tries to tag the other children in the swimming pool by listening to where they are. When Marco tags another child the game is over. The person that was tagged becomes Marco.

Another great swimming pool game is called beach ball bonanza. Each child is given a huge beach ball to hold on to with their arms. The point of this game is to bump other players into touching the sides of the pool. The children cannot use their hands or feet to bump other children. If a child gets bumped into the wall, they must sit out of the game until the next round. The last child in the game wins.

The third top pool game is called diving for treasure. Pick one child to be the person that is it. They are the sea monster. Then throw fake gold coins into the swimming pool. The other children that are not the sea monster must try to dive for the gold coins without getting tagged by the sea monster. If they get tagged, they must drop the coin back into the water and wait ten seconds before joining the game again. The coins that are collected can be set in different piles by the edge of the pool. When all of the coins have been collected, the child with the most coins win!

Swimming can be a great activity for children. By playing these games, children will have hours of fun. They will never want to get out of the pool.

Swimming is a great way to lose weight and get fit. There is less chance of injury in the a swimming pool since movements are slower. Pool exercises are great for muscle pain and joint problems as well, while still offering a great workout. Exercising in a pool gives an all-over body workout, as it works out every muscle in the body. A few simple exercises can boost your weight loss and can leave you feeling productive.

Arm Curls

Stand with your feet a little less than shoulder-width apart. Hold a weight in each hand. Keep the elbows tucked in to the sides. Starting with the right arm, fully extended down at the side. Curl the arm up until the arm is fully curled with the weight almost touching the shoulder. Make sure that the elbow stays in and touching the side of the body through the entire movement. Breathe in as the arm is curled up and exhale as the arm is fully extended again. Switch to the left arm and repeat. Start with 5 reps for each arm. As it becomes easier, increase the number of reps.

Dolphin Kick

The dolphin kick is used for the butterfly stroke. Dolphin kicking is extremely difficult and works the entire body all at once. Use either a kick board or place the hands on the wall. Keep the knees and feet together. Using the hips and abs, kick with knees and feet together, so that the movement goes from the hips, down to the knees and then to the feet (similar as to how a dolphin moves in the water, in a wave motion). This exercise will maximize the use of the ab muscles, since they are used the entire time. Do this kick for at least a minute as hard as possible. Increase the time as the kick becomes easier.

Swimming with Modesty

Who doesn’t like to take a dip in the blue sea on a warm sunny day? Or relax in a temperature controlled swimming pool with your family? Water parks are packed with families enjoying a cool outing during summer breaks. Such activities are commonplace in the US and other parts of the globe. There are, however, several communities across countries and continents that have a very cautious approach to aqua sports – especially when it comes to women.

The main point of contention for disallowing women to take up swimming is the attire. Many countries, especially in South East Asia and the Middle East, have cultures that require women to always be dressed modestly. Exposing their skin or wearing figure hugging clothes is considered indecent. Due to this reason, women from these countries and communities have been deprived of the simple pleasure of aqua sports. Should they want to go for a swim, they end up having to “women only” sports clubs or dedicated beaches. Even water theme parks have dedicated women’s days that enable female kind to enjoy water slides in an all woman environment. This trend, however, is set to change.

Bodykini is a swimwear that takes care of all the requirements of modesty while providing comfort to women who enjoy swimming. Bodykini covers a woman from head to toe, exposing only the face, hands and feet, something that is acceptable by almost all communities. The swimsuit is made of a highly elastic and water repellent fabric that dries off so quickly that is does not cling to the body when the woman emerges from water. The suit consists of two parts, a pant and a shirt with an attached hood. The pant and the shirt can be attached to each other using buttons which prevents the shirt from floating on water or rising up during a feet first dive. Bodykini is not only comfortable and in keeping with the standards of modesty but is elegantly stylish too, a sure hit among women. Now swimming and aqua sports are truly for everyone, something that ghst.org always encourages. Swim on!

Hair Care and Swimming

BAGHDAD, IRAQ, JUNE 12:- An Iraqi man helps hi...
Image by Getty Images via @daylife

It has been known for ages now that water from swimming pools can lead to hair loss and discoloration. The extent of damage is often over-hyped, with people not know what exactly causes the damage or how to prevent it. Misinformation may lead to people giving up swimming, which is completely unnecessary. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun has the potential of causing skin cancer, which does not mean that we stop going out in day light, does it? Ghst.org highlights here the cause and extent of hair damage due to swimming and also gives simple precautions to take in order to prevent it.

Swimming pool water is treated with chlorine and other chemicals in order to keep it bacteria and virus free. Although most swimming facilities take care to maintain acceptable levels of chemicals used, this cannot be guaranteed at sub-standard facilities. Chlorine has oxidizing agents that can reduce your hair moisture, leading to breakage and split ends. The other form of damage due to swimming pool water is hair discoloration. This is caused by copper present in the water bonding with your hair and then reacting to high pH levels, giving a greenish tinge to your hair. Although it true that water from swimming pools or at other man made aqua sport’s pools, can cause such damage, it is important to note the amount of exposure that is needed for this to happen. Hair damage and discoloration only occurs with those who swim regularly and do not take the necessary precautions to keep their hair safe.

The basic swimming etiquette of wearing a swimming cap is usually enough to prevent hair damage as it does not let pool water wet your hair. You can wet your hair with clean water before going for a swim as this saturates your hair and reduces soaking of chlorinated water. Rinsing your hair with non-chlorinated water immediately after a swim or between long durations spent in the pool washes off chlorine and copper and does not let it cling to your hair. Follow these steps to keep hair safe and enjoy a swim!

Custom Poker Tables and Swimming Pools

Image via Wikipedia

As crazy as it may sound, custom poker tables and swimming pools have a good deal in common. They are, or can be, of similar shape, and they are intended for sports and leisure. If you want to compare their similarities even further, both require time, money, and an inclination toward having fun.

If you have a home with space, and like active socializing, a custom poker table and a swimming pool are already in place, especially if you live in Nevada or near an Indian reservation where gambling is legal. Known for its blazing hot summers and rugged deserts, the Southwest drives people either indoors to cooler environs or outside and into the water.

Another activity that could be included in this unlikely comparison is pool (or billiards). It is also a popular game in the Southwest, in homes and clubs, and is easy to enjoy and play.

Darts follow in the succession of sports for indoor summer fun. In fact, if you have a dartboard, a pool table, a poker table, a pinball machine, a television, a bar, and a swimming pool, you are well on your way to being able to charge admission to your house gatherings.

If you do have all the above and did not completely drain your resources, getting customized versions is next on your list of priorities. Coordinated, top-of-the-line, quality items will keep a group of friends motivated to return and players motivated to keep playing. They also increase the odds that your friends will not laugh when you propose a four-digit poker tournament for Labor Day weekend.
