Captain Matthew Webb succeeded where the great Napoleon Bonaparte Emperor of the French Empire had failed. Webb had the advantage of not having to drag hundreds of thousands of soldiers, horses and tons of equipment with him, but Webb’s accomplishment still seems impressive given the physical effort required.

Webb is the first known person to cross the English Channel without the aid of a floatation device. Webb decided to attempt the swim after hearing that others had tried and failed. He quit his job as a member of the merchant navy and began grueling training for the attempt. His first attempt was aborted due to strong winds, but he tried again on Aug. 24, 1875. On this attempt he succeeded, but it was due more to will and effort than careful planning.

He swam a zig zag course that was 39 miles long and required almost 22 hours of time in the water. Webb suffered numerous stings from jellyfish and had to fight off strong currents that prevented him from reaching the shore. Webb basked in his success after wards and became a professional swimmer and showman. His name was attached to merchandise, and he wrote a book that detailed his swimming techniques.

Webb soon began to believe in his own public relations material. In 1883 he agreed to attempt a dangerous swim through the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls. Many observers at the time believed that the attempt was extremely dangerous. Webb seems to have survived the first part of the swim, but even for the mighty conqueror of the English Channel the rapid of Niagara proved to be too much. Webb drown in the section of the river near the entrance to the falls.

Webb proved to be a trailblazer as his cross Channel swim paved the way for several other swimmers. Modern swimmers have been able to make the attempt in less than seven hours, but it was Webb who made then believe they could.

Golf gains popularity in online sports betting

Online sports betting has been around for a while now. A couple of decades ago, people would have to physically go to book maker shops at the location of various sports if they wanted to gamble on their favorite team or players. The advent of the Internet and its presence in most households changed all that, though. There are hundreds of sites on now that offer betting on various sports. Some of these sites are even government approved, which means your money is (more or less) in safe hands while you gamble.

For a long time, online sports betting sites mainly catered to the most popular sports in the USA. These included basketball, baseball, football, rugby, tennis and even auto-races like the NASCAR and the Indy’s. However, as these sites gained higher visitor traffic with more people joining in the sports gamble game, the number of online sports betting sites mushroomed leading to some really stiff competition. Pretty soon, sites started looking at drawing in fresh crowds by offering betting on sports that were not covered earlier. One such sport happens to be golf.

A lot of online sports betting sites, or sportsbook as they are often called, now offer golfing enthusiasts the chance to place a bet on their favorite player. Now you can wager whether Tiger Woods is going to retain that championship or not! As with other sports, the sites provide bettors with in-depth player details like their style, recent win/lose record, their past performance on a particular course or tournament. All this is in addition to the usual betting odds. For those who are new to the sports gambling arena, such sites also give you useful hints and tips to follow in order to make safe bets and win more. With online golf betting gaining popularity, you can now play on the course as well as online.

In the summer Olympics of 2008 the world saw Michael Phelps break world record after world record. While the majority of the world was busy celebrating this amazing once in a lifetime achievement, others were using this as a unique opportunity to place bets on the Olympics.

Sports betting sites all over the Internet were flooded with people placing bets on a number of events in the swimming category. There were people who were betting on the recorded time of Michael Phelps, others who were placing bets on how many gold medals he’d win and even people who were betting that he wouldn’t break any world records. At one point, odds were even placed on whether he would be able to swim as fast as people believed he could.

Normally sports betting sites are filled with bets on professional sports such as baseball, football and horse racing. This new interest in placing bets on swimming events has lead to a new trend on sports betting sites. The use of the sites for other events other then the professional sports.

Many critics of sports betting sites wonder exactly where the betting will stop. Currently on any given sports betting site you can place a bet on college events, professional events, the Olympics and even some amateur events. Critics believe that eventually these sites will start to allow betting on high school sports. At the moment, high school sports have been left alone but considering the interest in betting on the Olympics, it could be a matter of time before high school sports are being bet on.

Seeing how many people were interested in betting on the Olympics in 2008, it’ll be amazing to see what type of turn out these sites get when the summer Olympics roll around in 2012. Who knows what people all over the world will be betting on during those Olympic games.

Top 3 Water Sports for Families

Tubing behind a jetski

Water sports are invigorating, but if you want family fun, make sure you bring your kids along with you. When kids get involved in water sports, not only do they become interested in a new hobby, but it will lead to them being more active. It will also give you a chance to spend more time with the ones you love. But with so many water sports out there, it’s difficult to decide which one to choose.

The most popular water sport out there today – whether it’s for families, couples, or individuals – is jet skiing. The primary reason jet skiing has become so popular is freedom. Instead of having a boat pull you, you control the speed and direction. Jet skiing is a popular family water sport because everyone can travel near one another while traveling at fast speeds and remain safe. Anyone – adults and kids alike – will find it to be an exhilarating experience.

Another popular water activity is tubing. Water skiing has led to many different types of sports on the water, and when it comes to families, tubing is by far the most popular. Tubes come in various sizes, from single tubes to large circular rafts that can fit several people. Instead of enjoying the water on your own, you can now experience the excitement of being pulled by a motor boat with others, which of course makes it more fun. Another reason tubing is so great is because everyone can talk about it after the activity is complete, which greatly improves communication between family members.

If jet skiing and tubing are a little too fast-paced for you or your kids, buy a paddle boat. Paddle boats are a good way to get exercise while communicating with others and enjoying scenery. It’s known as a relaxing water sport and is a great way to wind down after a busy day or week.
