Michael Phelps Planning Last Trip to Olympics

Phelps now holds the record for winning the most gold medals in any one Olympics. His overall medal total is only two behind Larissa Latynina, who holds the record for having the most Olympic medals at 18.
As a result of his success he captured endorsements and thousands of fans, and was named by “Sports Illustrated” as the Sportsman of the Year. After the Olympics, Phelps also ran into a little trouble with the law, but now seems to be back on track and gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Due to his success, Phelps has been hounded by questions of performance enhancing drugs. But he always tests clean and is even involved with the US Anti-Doping Agency’s “Project Believe” program to ensure it. His amazing success is more attributable to his physique. He is tall and thin, with a disproportionately long arm span and long feet that act like flippers. He was created to be a swimmer.
Phelps was recently named to the United States team for the World Swimming Championships that will be held in July. There, he plans to compete in the 200 meter freestyle, up to three relays, four individual events and a couple of other events, too.
The World Swimming Championships will help ensure Phelps is in top form for the 2012 games. Phelps has said this will be his last Olympics, and that he plans to compete in some new events. If he is in top form, as he appears to be now, perhaps he will bring home another record-setting amount of medals to add to his trophy case.

Conquering the English Channel

Captain Matthew Webb succeeded where the great Napoleon Bonaparte Emperor of the French Empire had failed. Webb had the advantage of not having to drag hundreds of thousands of soldiers, horses and tons of equipment with him, but Webb’s accomplishment still seems impressive given the physical effort required.

Webb is the first known person to cross the English Channel without the aid of a floatation device. Webb decided to attempt the swim after hearing that others had tried and failed. He quit his job as a member of the merchant navy and began grueling training for the attempt. His first attempt was aborted due to strong winds, but he tried again on Aug. 24, 1875. On this attempt he succeeded, but it was due more to will and effort than careful planning.

He swam a zig zag course that was 39 miles long and required almost 22 hours of time in the water. Webb suffered numerous stings from jellyfish and had to fight off strong currents that prevented him from reaching the shore. Webb basked in his success after wards and became a professional swimmer and showman. His name was attached to merchandise, and he wrote a book that detailed his swimming techniques.

Webb soon began to believe in his own public relations material. In 1883 he agreed to attempt a dangerous swim through the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls. Many observers at the time believed that the attempt was extremely dangerous. Webb seems to have survived the first part of the swim, but even for the mighty conqueror of the English Channel the rapid of Niagara proved to be too much. Webb drown in the section of the river near the entrance to the falls.

Webb proved to be a trailblazer as his cross Channel swim paved the way for several other swimmers. Modern swimmers have been able to make the attempt in less than seven hours, but it was Webb who made then believe they could.

Natural Defense of the English Channel

The British Empire was forced to become a sea faring power due to the 21 mile wide passage at the Straight of Dover that separated it from mainland Europe. Without this stretch world history might have been very different.

The land military leader to successfully cross the English Channel was William the Conqueror in 1066. The Norman King staked his claim to the English crown earned his stake after his forces were victorious at the Battle of Hastings. The Bayeux Tapestry depicted the fateful battle and ensured that William would be remembered by history. England would never suffer occupation of its homeland again, and the Channel proved to be the saving grace for the British Isles.

Napoleon lost the ability to seriously threaten Britain after the loss of his fleet at the sea Battle of Trafalgar. Admiral Horatio Nelson lost sacrificed his life, but his service would not be in vain since the French would never be able to mount a serious cross Channel invasion there again. Napoleon attempted to force his occupied vassal states to build his a flotilla capable of crossing the Channel, but the efforts fell short. Napoleon abandoned his plans to invade England and looked east. The Russian frontier destroyed his Grand Armee and ended Napoleon’s supremacy over Europe.

When the next would be conqueror of Europe threaten Britain the Channel once again proved to be the saving grace for the British people. Nazi armies entered Paris, Hitler and the German General staff devised Operation Sea Lion. The planned German invasion never materialized after the Royal Air Force fought the Luftwaffe to a standstill.

Several swimmers have been able to cross the waters of the English Channel, but for the people of England the stretch of water has proven to be a life saver. Hitler and Napoleon could not cross the Channel when it mattered the most.

Lalanne’s Feats of Strength

Fitness guru Jack LaLanne is considered the grandfather of American bodybuilding and perhaps the first person to become famous based upon the promotion of healthy living. After receiving his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Oakland Chiropratic College in San Francisco he opened his own health spa.

LaLanne was an innovator who encouraged women to lift weights even though the practice was considered unfeminine at the time. LaLanne might have laid the ground work for the majority of modern exercise equipment machines. He is credited with developing the Smith Machine, which is a way to work out the pectoral muscles without the risk of a free weight bench press. While his is linked to the Smith Machine there are several other pieces of exercise equipment that Lalanne created but never applied for copyright. He estimates that he lost out on millions of dollars because his early business sense did not match his expertise in the physical fitness.

LaLanne might living proof of the success of his views of fitness and nutrition. He is still active into his 90s. LaLanne says that he has two simple rules of fitness: “if man made it don’t eat it” and “if it tastes good spit it out”.

Off all the things that LaLanne is know for he might be best know for his “feats of strength” that accompanied his birthday. Most of his feats involved water since LaLanne was a dedicated swimmer. At the age of 40 he swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge underwater with 140 pound strapped to his back. The next year he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf while handcuffed. At the age of 70 he showed that he still had it by again swimming while handcuffed. This time he dragged 70 boats with 70 people in Long Island Harbor. The physical fitness guru showed that superhuman feats can be accomplished through dedication to nutrition and fitness.
