Safety Through Flotation: Swimming

A man wearing a life jacket, with another life...

It’s a rush of water, a dive beneath the surface — you’ve flung yourself from the edge of a pool, flail happily among the chlorine. It was an easy impulse, a wish to experience relief from the summer. The ripples beckoned; the promise of being cold thrilled; and you jumped without concern for the depth…. or your lack of experience.

You can’t swim: this is an unfortunate truth and one that can’t be denied as you struggle in the water. Slick walls defy your fingers; a floor sprawls too far away to balance against; and the rumble of the drains is deafening. You’re trapped.

And this is when you rely on a flotation device to save you.

Too often is the notion of a floatation device dismissed — especially by adults. Life jackets, buoyancy aids, compensators and more are deemed unnecessary. Their styles don’t please; their designs don’t impress. They instead conjure images of bobbing uselessly in a pool, unable to move under the weight of straps, locks and bulky foam.

The necessity of these devices is without question, however. Those not yet able to swim (without knowledge of at least one stroke) must wear some form of protection. These items maintain safety – reducing the possibility of drowning by over 90 percent.

Such a statistic can’t be ignored: even as adults may wish to, thinking these aids render them suddenly childish. Precaution isn’t offered only to youths, however. It’s instead needed for all — and floatation aids ensure that accidents are greatly (if not almost entirely) reduced.

Everybody Needs a Change Sometimes

There are a lot of different things you can wear when you work out. While you can always fall back on tried and true favorites like nudity, they have laws against that in most instances. You could also try wearing trash bags and the heaviest wool you can find like a wrestler would, but heat stroke can be a problem. Sometimes you need to go with a happy medium, and it may take some experimenting to find that medium.

Take Nike clothing, for instance. While you might not be wearing a huge amount of fabric when you don some Nike gear, you won’t get arrested for indecent exposure with it on. You also won’t feel like you’re wearing a giant burlap sack, either. There is a happy medium when it comes to athletic wear. You need to be aware of how your workout clothes affect your performance. Of course, Nike clothes come in a lot of different varieties, and they aren’t just for one type of athlete. Both men and women can wear different lines, depending on their sport of choice.

Nike has come a long way from just selling and making shoes. You can wear clothes designed to keep your muscles in place during track and field events, as well as looser fitting clothes for golf or tennis. Naturally, men’s clothing needs to be cut differently than women’s because of the dramatic differences in their body types and fashion trends. However, the biggest thing to keep in mind isn’t just wearing clothes specifically designed for your sport and your gender. You need to think through how your clothes will help you perform better.

Brief History of Backstroke

Swimming has always been a major interest of athletes all over the world. However, it should be interesting to note that there are a lot of facts and history surrounding the backstroke. Here are some interesting facts and historical elements about the backstroke.

Ancient History. The backstroke is actually pictured in ancient pictures. It is believed that this style of swimming can date back to the early years. In fact backstrokes are mentioned in the Bible.

Back Swimming. The backstroke is the only stroke that allows swimmers to swim on their backs and breath through their mouths properly.

Olympic Debut. The backstroke made its Olympic debut in 1900. It was actually one of the last styles of swimming strokes to enter the Olympic competition. Swimming competitions were around before that but there was no official backstroke in the mix.

Changes. There are very little changes that have happened to the backstroke. Some of the strokes have seen some improvements over the years but the backstroke has remained virtually unchanged over the years. The only slight change that happened over the years is that the arm will be slightly bent so that there is more momentum and freedom to move around. This was discovered in the early 2000s and has been used since then.

Starting in Pool. All swim strokes require that the swimmer to start out of the water. The backstroke is the only stroke that allows swimmers to start their swimming competition in the water instead of out of the water.

Swimwear Trends – Choose What’s Best for You

While it may be the miserable middle of winter now, it won’t be long at all before the stores are full of the latest swimwear styles for the summer. Here is a guide of what to look for when you go shopping for your swimsuits this year.

When it comes to fashion, it is all in the details and it is no different in swimwear. This year, look for interesting dressmaking details like ruching, ruffles, embroidery, belts and more. Swimsuit designers are also using a lot of exciting prints in their fabrics this year. Bold stripes and floral prints, and bright colors in almost every hue will dominate the stores.

The best designers use these details to highlight your body’s assets – and disguise those parts of your body you would prefer people not notice.

You should also choose a swimsuit style that works best with your figure. Few people enjoy shopping for a swimsuit, but thankfully swimsuit designers work hard these days to develop a variety of fits and styles so that nearly everyone can find something that will work for them.

Bikinis are a perennial favorite for many people. This traditional style comes in many versions, from barely-there to the almost full coverage tankini style. People who prefer a bikini top but more coverage on their legs sometimes choose the boy leg style pant.

Serious swimmers always choose a traditional one-piece, or tank, swimsuit for active swimming and water workouts. The coverage, fit and comfort level of a well-made tank swimsuit can’t be beat. If you are planning to shop for this type of swimsuit, you will want to invest in a quality suit because in the case of swimwear, the old adage of “you get what you pay for” definitely holds true.

Finally, consider some accessories to coordinate with your new swimsuit. Sarongs, dress and skirt cover-ups and flip flops or other sandals can complete your summer swimming look.

Surfing for Beginners

A lot of people dream of surfing. They see photos and videos, they watch movies that glamorize the sport and they think, “I can do that. That looks like fun.” But it is not a good – or safe – idea to jump right into surfing without considering a few things first.

Probably the most important thing to think about is how strong of a swimmer you are, and your level of experience swimming in rough open water. It is not for the faint of heart, and it takes significantly more strength and skill than paddling around the local swimming pool. And remember you should never swim out with your surfboard any further than you can easily swim without it. If you lose your board, you won’t be able to rest on your swim back to the beach.

Also consider your overall physical fitness. Swimming, getting up to your feet on your board and executing moves may look easy when done by an experienced surfer, but it takes a lot of strength and skill to achieve that level of competency. The best surfers spend nearly as much time in the gym keeping their physical fitness level up as they do on the waves.

Finally, you must always remember to think about safety first. Always tune to the weather and wave reports before you go out. You do not want to get caught in a sudden storm, or surf if there is any risk of a riptide. Also, never surf alone. It only takes a moment for something to go wrong enough that you may need help. Another good tip to remember is to always tell someone else where you are planning to surf. The ocean is fun, but it can surprisingly dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing and you do not take proper precautions.

You have a secret — one you have been forced to keep hidden from the world, tucked inside the depths of your silence. You despise the city. Crowds frustrate you; miles of stone depress; and you loathe every instant you must spend in subway chaos, moving through the underground. Skin was meant instead for the water, the easy strokes through waves. But there are no oceans to seek in your concrete boundaries. There are only community shared pools, the horrors of dirty diving.

It’s enough to make you sob — or search for relief.

There is hope to find. You must simply know where to look:

Through the careful efforts of San Diego property management, there has been an excess of coastal paths spared from gentrification. While so many cities are damming up their rivers, selling off their brooks, San Diego is instead embracing them. There is a wealth of water to find there. And for you this can be ideal.

Challenge yourself with strong currents and quick breezes along North Beach. Enjoy the lazy tides of Fiesta Island. Seek out the pools and small inlets of Del Mar (wonderful for those wishing to explore as well as swim). Black’s Beach is an isolated treasure, allowing you to separate yourself from tourists and their tedium. Miramar Reservoir, with its smooth waves, is perfect for laps and practicing. And Mission Bay Park is the country’s largest man-made beach system — and provides over 4,000 acres to discover.

The concrete towers don’t appeal. They’ve instead reduced you to apathy. You need more than your city offers. You need… water.

San Diego provides that, allowing you to strengthen your skills and gain the hours you crave. It’s a complete submersion in nature without the expected accompaniment of strangers). You can find the lakes and oceans you want, and achieve the peace you’ve been wishing for.

It’s easy.

Golf gains popularity in online sports betting

Online sports betting has been around for a while now. A couple of decades ago, people would have to physically go to book maker shops at the location of various sports if they wanted to gamble on their favorite team or players. The advent of the Internet and its presence in most households changed all that, though. There are hundreds of sites on now that offer betting on various sports. Some of these sites are even government approved, which means your money is (more or less) in safe hands while you gamble.

For a long time, online sports betting sites mainly catered to the most popular sports in the USA. These included basketball, baseball, football, rugby, tennis and even auto-races like the NASCAR and the Indy’s. However, as these sites gained higher visitor traffic with more people joining in the sports gamble game, the number of online sports betting sites mushroomed leading to some really stiff competition. Pretty soon, sites started looking at drawing in fresh crowds by offering betting on sports that were not covered earlier. One such sport happens to be golf.

A lot of online sports betting sites, or sportsbook as they are often called, now offer golfing enthusiasts the chance to place a bet on their favorite player. Now you can wager whether Tiger Woods is going to retain that championship or not! As with other sports, the sites provide bettors with in-depth player details like their style, recent win/lose record, their past performance on a particular course or tournament. All this is in addition to the usual betting odds. For those who are new to the sports gambling arena, such sites also give you useful hints and tips to follow in order to make safe bets and win more. With online golf betting gaining popularity, you can now play on the course as well as online.

Swimdresses: New Silhouettes for Swimming

Swimdresses provide a lot of coverage and a feminine silhouette when swimming. It’s recently become a trend for women of all ages. Previously, it was more of a dated design for more mature women. A trendy suit can feel modern or vintage.

Look for a form fitting silhouette. This will have a straighter skirt without all of the pleating from past decades. The skirt should also be slightly longer so it looks intentional. Make sure that it’s still tight enough to be suitable for swimming.

Skip the floral prints. In past decades floral printed swimdresses were common. Now along with the sleeker silhouettes there are also more modern color palettes. Just go for a basic black suit. Even though it’s a neutral color it will still be interesting because of the silhouette. You can also try out a more daring turquoise tone.

Vintage swimming apparel would feature this silhouette a lot. You can get the same look just by going with a polka dot fabric. You can also try out a halter version with thick straps for extra support.

The construction of the dress makes it suitable for swimming. It looks like a dress with all the functionality of the swimsuit. There are regular swim bottoms underneath the skirt.

A swimdress can be modest and still show off your figure. Look for a ruched design. This is going to have a series of gathers to give a flattering shape to your swimming attire. Depending on your figure this can be around your waist for an hourglass shape.

Even though this is a vintage inspired design it can still look youthful. This makes it appropriate for all different age levels or anyone who wants more coverage when swimming. In this case you can find a fun oversized paisley print. The suit should have minimal details and ruffles. Instead the focus of the outfit is on the funky print and the unusual lines.

Advances in Swimming Products

Ear plugs

Swimming is a staple in sports but technology is revolutionizing the hobby. You can use these items for gifts for athletes or swimming enthusiasts. There is a range of price points to choose from.

Mp3 players are a must have for most sports but haven’t really been applicable to swimming before. Look for an armband to easily secure the mp3 player while working out. Waterproof varieties make it suitable for swimming. Read the product description before you take it into the pool because it will only work up to a certain depth. Find large buttons that you can use while you swim. There are also items that will float so you can find the player easily.

Technology has made advances in goggles. Mirrored lenses give more of the look of sunglasses and you can get different colors of lenses. There are also angled lenses for training.

Look for special features in waterproof watches. You might need to change the settings while you’re underneath the water. Some versions allow you to start and stop the watch just by tapping on the glass which works well for laps. A molded polycarbonate version fits close to the body for comfort.

You can also use new materials for traditional items. Silicone nose clips are inexpensive. Rubber ear plugs provide protection from the water.

Water resistant materials help with the trend of water aerobics. This is a way to use weights without putting stress on your joints. This could be a jog belt, aqua barbells, or leg trainers. A fitness belt helps you stay vertical while working out in the water. Make sure that it has an adjustable strap for a comfortable fit.

There have been advancements in the suits for swimming as well. A reversible suit gives you two different looks for the price of one which works out well if you go to the pool or beach several times a week. For water polo look for a calenderized fabric which is difficult to keep a hold of. This is a process using heat to melt the fibers together.

Mixing and Matching Seperates for Swimming

Separates for swimming provide a lot more versatility than just a one piece suit. These pieces are also inexpensive. You can invest in a few neutral bottoms that will work with several different tops. This gives you the option to wear a different look whenever you go swimming. You can also update the entire swimwear wardrobe with just one or two new pieces every season to keep up with trends.

Get at least one patterned piece. This could just be a retro inspired stripe in aqua and chocolate brown on the side of your shorts. This allows you to pair it with several different colors of tops. You can also mix and match your patterns if you keep the pieces in the same color palette. This allows you to go swimming in both floral prints and stripes.

Vary up the level of coverage on both the top and bottom. You can wear the same basic swim trunks with a tankini top or a bikini. This allows you to tailor your swimwear depending on your mood.

You can also change out the bottoms to experiment with a lot of different silhouettes. Try a swim skirt. This can be fitted, and mimic a sarong. Just make sure that it’s short with built in trunks so it still works for swimming.

Boardshorts have been a staple for men’s swimwear, but now it’s fashionable for women too. The women’s versions usually come in brighter colors such as lime green or orange. The pieces are also shorter and tighter so you can use it in the water.

There are a lot of patterns you can experiment with when you dress for swimming. The print might not relate to water such as a camouflage version. Depending on the color palette houndstooth will feel modern or retro. A retro version would combine two colors such as aqua and purple. A modern version would stick with at least one neutral color such as silver and white.
